Collaging a Gender-Equal Future: Tailoring the Transformations of the Euro-Mediterranean Space

Launched by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), in collaboration with the EuroMediterranean Women’s Foundation in the framework of the project “Voix de Femmes – Itinerant Festival” coordinated by Forum Femmes Méditerranée

OVERVIEW

2020 has been a year traversed by instability, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left its imprint in the whole world, including the Euro-Mediterranean region. However, the effects of the virus have not been the same for everyone. Gender disparities have widened: gender roles have become more embedded, the hardships of women workers in charge of unpaid care work and family duties have risen, and difficulties have increased for the most vulnerable women and girls. Furthermore, women have been in the front line of the pandemic, as they have been and continue to be more present in those sectors most exposed to the virus. Gender experts agree to point out that gender-based violence has also ramified following the spread of the pandemic, due to the confinement and because it has intersected with the effects that the COVID-19 has caused in multiple sectors of the Euro-Mediterranean societies. At the same time, experts and civil society actors highlight that the pandemic can be perceived as a window of opportunity to build a safer and more egalitarian world, to favour societies in which gender equality is a cross-sectional element, to make the world better hear women’s and girls’ voices.

“Collaging a Gender-Equal Future: Tailoring the Transformation of the Euro-Mediterranean Space” is born to contribute to such an understanding. Through the particular artistic language of collage, participants are invited to shed light on the complexities of gender equality in our present and/or to imagine alternative scenarios and strategies to overcome the hardships accentuated by the pandemic towards a gender-equal future. Because of its hybrid nature, collages favour diversity and allow for the dialogue of textures, topics, cultural traditions and languages that can help us think about our present with new lenses. Send your collage and present your ideas for a transformed, egalitarian Euro-Mediterranean space!
